The "Copa del Cafè" (Coffee Bowl) is and has been one of the best junior tennis tournaments in the world. It is an ITF Grade 1 Tournament but has the feel and excitement of the Grand Slam and Grade A junior tournaments that take place every year, and which are played by the best ranked junior players in the world. The spark for starting “la Copa” in our country took place in 1965 with a group of tennis players at the Costa Rica Country Club. They formed an Organizing Committee, staffed by volunteer club members, which over the years has worked hard to make this tournament even better. The Committee members, club personnel, and corporate sponsors have worked together to make the tournament a prestigious tennis event on an international level. It is arguably Costa Rica`s premier international athletic event. The 2011 Coffee Bowl will be our 47th edition. Ever since the first “Copa” in 1965 the tournament has received strong international support from top players and dedicated coaches, and this has contributed enormously to our success and the tournament`s prestige. Over the years our tournament and its costs have grown enormously. It is not possible to organize and present the Coffee Bowl without the invaluable assistance of corporate sponsors, and it has been our privilege to share our success with many sponsors over our 45 year history. For 2011 we are happy to receive support from prestigious companies such as: Mercado de Valores Puesto de Bolsa, Coca Cola, Café Britt, Penn, Radio 94,7, Periódico La República, Amnet Cablevisión, Hotel Quality, and others. The Coffee Bowl is part of a junior circuit backed by the International Tennis Federation and supported by the tennis federations of many tennis rich countries. Our tournament is by far the oldest junior tournament in Latin America and every year the Coffee Bowl receives entries from more than 40 countries. Our record was 48 countries, achieved in 2008. We have televised night play every day selling out our stadium for several nights of the week`s play, and averaging over 3,000 spectators each day. Famous tennis players, many of them well known professionals now or in the past, have honored us over the years with their play on the courts of the Costa Rica Country Club. A list of some of our more famous alumni and their country of origin is a list of world tennis during the past 40 years.
