The Boys quarterfinals on Wednesday had only 4 seeded players, which could mean that the Copa del Cafe 2013 championship is up for grabs. No. 1 seed Nikola MILOJEVIC of Serbia had a difficult time with tenacious Tenreiro, finally subduing the Venezuelan in three difficult sets 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. No. 4 seed Jorge PANTA of Peru also made it with a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Diego NUÑEZ FELIX of Mexico, as did unseeded Justin BUTSCH of USA and Nam Hoang LY of Vietnam. In the bottom half of the draw 2 unseeded players made it to the quarterfinals: Tommy MYLNIKOV of Canada, and Juan MARIÑO of Colombia. The other 2 slots have gone to Chi Shan JAO of Taiwan, seeded 14, and Belgian Clement GEENS (no. 3) who put on a great show during night play, defeating Dennis USPENSKY of USA by a convincing 6-2, 6-1. Several spectators expressed their opinion that GEENS is a likely finalist, which may come to pass as the Belgian is now the top seed in his half of the draw.
The Girls Singles Draw intensified today as the 8 quarterfinal slots are all occupied by seeded players, including the top 7. Nevertheless, top seed Christina MAKAROVA had her hands full today with upstart Usue ARCONADA of USA and had to come from behind to post a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. No. 7 seed Valeria PATIUK of Israel also had a tough battle, winning in three sets over Rasheeda MCADOO of USA. The rest of the quarterfinalists won in straight sets. These are Varvara FLINK (seeded 6) of Russia, Victoria RODRIGUEZ (3) of Mexico, Laura UCROS (5) of Colombia, Veronika KUDERMETOVA (4) of Russia, Alexandra CISNEROS (11) of Mexico, and Karin KENNEL (2) of Switezrland. The semifinals will be tough matches, indeed.
