The Boys and Girls finals were held this year on Sunday, and we could not have asked for a better setting with a bright, sunny, beautiful afternoon. The Girls final went first, where underdog Varvara FLINK, sixteen years old and seeded 6, overcame a first set loss to take the championship 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 over fellow Russian Veronika KUDERMETOVA, seeded 4 and only fifteen years old. It was great tennis and the “older” girl was able to draw on a quiet strength and great court poise.
The Boys Championship was won by Serbia´s Nikola MILOSEVIC seeded 1 and now no. 1 in the world. The score was 7-5, 6-2 and in this match Nikola finally had a strong start and held back the unseeded hard-hitting Tommy MYLNIKOV of Canada who had an excellent tournament. Tommy beat back several seeded and higher ranked players to get to the final and will be a force in Boys Junior Tennis in 2013.
Doubles were played Saturday night, where Alejandra CISNEROS and Victoria RODRIGUEZ of Mexico overcame the Russian Veronika KUDERMETOVA and Christina MAKAROVA of USA by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. The championship went down to the wire and the Mexican duo were finally able to prevail in this hard fought contest.
The Boys Doubles were won by Franko MIOCIC of Croatia and Guillermo NUÑEZ of Chile over Jordi ARCONADA of Argentina and Luca CORINTELI of USA. The elegant MIOCIC and the play making NUÑEZ played strong doubles throughout the tournament and dominated the final with stellar play.
We heartily congratulate and thank all of our 2013 champions, finalists, and players for a fine tournament, and wish them well for the remainder of the year and hope that those who are still eligible next year will visit us once again for the 50th running of the Copa del Café.
