Second round singles action was intense on Tuesday, Day 2 of the Copa del Café 2015, as was first round doubles play. Overall, 63 matches took place (one bye in girls doubles) in sometimes windy and cool conditions. Match play was slower than round one singles action as the more intense competition resulted in more 3 set matches, 10 out of 32.

In the Boys Singles Draw 6 seeds are now out (nos. 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 11) which opens up the draw, especially in the first half. But unfortunately for players in this part of the draw, top seed Sora FUKUDA of Japan looks like a strong contender for the final, as he easily dispatched an overmatched Sid DONARSKI of Canada 6-0, 6-2. Two notable upsets were posted by American Zeke CLARK over no. 10 seed Tiago CACAO of Portugal 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) and California based Ryan STORRIE of GBR over 6TH seeded American Catalin MATEAS by 7-5. 6-3.

The Girls Singles Draw has 5 seeds out (3, 7, 10, 15, 16) which means 11 seeds are headed to the round of 16. Three notable upsets Tuesday included a big win by American Jaclyn SWITKES ranked 1246 over no. 10 seed Austrian Mira ANTONITSCH ranked 163 by a score of 6-3, 6-3, and by Nada DIMOVSKA of USA (no. 1101) over Russian Evgeniya LEVASHOVA (no. 34, seeded 3) by 6-3. 6-2. The third Girls singles upset was by Ulyana SHIROKOVA of Russia (ranked 1064) over Alexandra MILLER-KRASILNIKOV of USA (ranked 290, seeded 16) by 6-3, 6-3. This trio of surprises underscores that in junior tennis, a lower ranking may simply reflect lack of match play rather than lack of ability.

Doubles action started on Tuesday afternoon. In Boys action there was a major surprise as the top seeded team of FUKUDA of Japan and KECMANOVIC of Serbia (no. 1 and 2 seeds in singles) lost to a superlative duo of Dominicans, Tristan BAUTIL and William KIRKMAN by 6-4, 4-6, [11-9]. All other seeded Boys teams advanced to the second round. Girls Doubles saw 2 seeded teams fall. Both were notable in the ranking differentials as DAVIS / WATERS of USA, ranked 1643 and 415) defeated ANTONITSCH / LAWSON (163, and 448, respectively) by 7-5, 7-6 (3), and the other American duo of CHI / REAMI (ranked 1050 and 1431) took out the seeded 6th MILLER (USA) / MORALES (MEX) ranked 290 and 287) by a 6-2, 6-3 score. It is notable that in singles Meible CHI upset Brazilean 7th seed PEDRETTI despite the 933 ranking point differential. CHI is a player to watch.
