Elizabeth MANDLIK [4] of the United States
Play was intense again in the Boys and Girls single draw as the final four players take their berths in the semifinals.

In the top half of the Boys draw 8th seed Brandon NAKASHIMA of USA surprised top seed Trey HILDERBRAND (USA) in a tough match during night play by 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. HILDERBRAND could have closed it out in 2 sets but NAKASHIMA would not give up and was unrelenting with his passing shots as HILDERBRAND rushed the net with his serve and volley game. Seventh seed Keenan MAYO dispatched unseeded Toby KODAT in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to round out an all American top half of the draw in the only easy Boys match of the quarterfinals.

Brazilean 3rd seed Mateus ALVES prevailed over the tough 6th seed Tyler ZINK of USA in another grueling 3 setter, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The Brazilean was just a little stronger than the American and is a major threat to go all the way and is now the top seed remaining. The last Boys semifinal berth went to Harold MAYOT of France who bested Sebastian RODRIGUEZ of Perú by 6-4, 6-4. Both players were unseeded but were numbers 18 and 20 on the draw list at the beginning of play, with very close rankings of 147 and 153 respectively. It was a close match as both played well but in the end it was the Frenchman who pulled it out.

In the Girls singles draw top seed Maria Camila OSORIO of Colombia easily beat back no. 5 seed Chloe BECK of USA 6-2, 6-0. BECK had a good tournament but was no match for the crafty Colombian. Maria Camila showcased her versatile and tactically strong brand of tennis, playing from the baseline but also going to net, mixing precision and location with devastating drop shots. She will be tough to beat.

In the other top half of the draw fourth seed Elizabeth MANDLIK finally put an end to Charlotte OWENSBY´s dream run at the Copa by a score of 7-6, 6-3. With a world ranking of 644, on paper OWENSBY was not a candidate for the quarterfinals yet she proved on the court that she belongs at this level. At only 14 years of age, she was outmaneuvered by the “veteran” MANDLIK who is 16 and demonstrated composure and confidence during the match. MANDLIK lost in the first round last year and has now reached the semifinal with a more mature and complete game.

In the bottom half of the Girls draw Canadian 9th seed Alexandra VAGRAMOV dispatched Skyler GRISHUK of USA by 7-5, 6-0. The match started outdoors but because of rain was finished indoors and the change of court seemed to affect the American. VAGRAMOV looks strong this year and has vastly improved over her 2017 Copa where she went down in the second round. The final spot in the Girls semifinal went to 7th seed Lea MA of USA, overpowering unseeded fellow American Nikki REDELIJK by a score of 6-1, 6-4. Lea is also back from 2017 where she lost in the third round so reaching the semifinals is redemption for both VAGRAMOV and MA, as well as MANDLIK.

Quarterfinals Boys Doubles play saw 2 matches going to the third set 10 point tiebreak. Top seeds NANDA / ZINK of USA prevailed over the south Americans duo of BARREIROS (BRA) / MARCH (ECU) by 7-6, 6-2. The USA team of HAN / ROLLINS had a more difficult time against the Argentines DIAZ / RIQUELME, prevailing 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 in what looked to be a tossup match. Americans KOPCZYNSKI / MAYO also had to go to the third set tiebreak to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 over American and Romanian BICKNELL / IONEL in another tossup match. The last spot in the semifinals was the most surprising as the unseeded French duo of CAZAUX / DESCHAMPS easily dispatched no. 5 seeds HILDERBRAND / MANDLIK by the comfortable score of 6-0, 6-3.

Quarterfinals Girls Doubles also included 2 matches in straight sets and 2 going to 3rd set tiebreak featuring a varied cast of player nationalities. Unseeded Americans COLLINS / YALOZ took out top seeds BECK / ONG of USA by 7-6, 4-6, 10-7, and south Americans DE SANTA ANA (URU) / VERGARA (CHI) bested the other latins CARDENAS (MEX) / CCUNO (PER) in a battle of the unseeded teams. The 3RD seeded duo of HARVEY (USA) / OSORIO (COL) prevailed over Americans GUEVARA / STEIN seeded 7 by a margin of 6-4, 7-6, and unseeded KAWAGUCHI (JPN) / KIMCHI (ISR) defeated no. 6 seed NAGY (HUN) / AGRAMOV (CAN).
