After 212 matches played on the courts of the Costa Rica Country Club, including the Qualy, in the 54th Copa del Café the list now goes down to the last 4 for Saturday´s matchups. The finals for 2018 for Boys and Girls Singles and Doubles will play out at Stadium Court starting at 4:30pm until it´s all over. The weather finally appears to be cooperating for a showcase of tennis today. But how did we get here? What happened in Friday´s semifinals on the road to the final?

Friday´s first singles match featured Girls no. 1 seed María Camila OSORIO of Colombia against USA´s Elizabeth Mandlik seeded 4. Both girls played well but OSORIO´s more versatile game opening up the court with greater angles and drop shots gave the nod to the South American. In the other semifinal no. 7 seed Lea MA of USA got past Alexandra VAGRAMOV of Canada by 6-3. 6-4. MA´s demeanor on court is calm and collected and she outlasted the Canadian with great defensive skills to make the final.

The road to the final for these last 2 Girls has been as follows:

Boys matches were both played under the lights to the delight of a packed Stadium Court. In the first match Keenan MAYO of USA went up against fellow American Brandon NAKASHIMA. MAYO, who turns 18 in May but looks like he´s going on 30, is a strong player with heavy groundstrokes, yet the calm and business like NAKASHIMA responded well and gave tit for tat. But in the end MAYO prevailed in 3 sets.

In the final evening match no. 3 seed Mateus ALVES of Brazil squared off against unseeded Frenchman Harold MAYOT. As the remaining top seed ALVES may have been favored but the “unharolded” MAYOT played with aplomb and clean striking of the ball to frustrate the talented brazilean. At the end of the night, MAYOT won in surprisingly easy fashion in straight sets at 2, 1.

In Girls Doubles the USA duo of COLLINS / YALOZ upended the south americans DE SANTA ANA (URU) / VERGARA (CHI) by the comfortable score of 6-2, 6-1 in a battle of unseeded teams to make the final. In the other semifinal doubles match the also unseeded KAWAGUCHI (JPN) / KIMCHI (ISR) surprised the no. 3 seeded HARVEY (USA) / OSORIO (COL) team in a hard fought 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 to take the other spot in the final.

In the Boys Doubles draw, no. 1 seeds NANDA (USA) / ZINK (USA) beat back fellow Americans HAN / ROLLINS in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 for their berth in the finals.
